DescriptionDaring, adventurous and, above all, at the cutting edge of innovation. This is a fitting description for the design processes surrounding the realization of the TNT Centre in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. Thanks to the ambitious sustainability requirements that had been set for the building, designing the new TNT head office was one big adventure. The project is synonymous with ‘The New Way of Designing`. TNT`s motto is connectivity and this theme formed the guiding principle for this ambitious project: i.e. the human user is key. This translated into an open and transparent building that comprises a U-formed six-floor main volume around an atrium. This atrium is the heart of the building and serves as a single large meeting area. Sustainable Features: Emissions: TNT has the ambition to become the first zero emissions post and express company in the world.
Energy: 100% sustainable energy generated on-site; Thermal Energy Storage (TES) with heat pump; Biofuel Combined Heat and Power (Bio CHP) from biological waste; Green roof with solar panels;
Light: Innovative sun blinds to optimize daylight access to building and to minimize the use of electric light; Intelligent lighting system with presence detection.
Water: Water-saving sanitary appliances, saving > 30% in water consumption
Materials: Only FSC-certified wood, more than 20% recycled, all materials extracted and produced within a 500 mile radius, low emission materials.
Certificates: LEED Platinum, GreenCalc+ 1005, Energy label A+++. Image Copyrights, 1: Pieter Kers, 2: Bowie Verschuuren, 3: Pieter kers, 4:Alexander Van Berge
