DescriptionFounded in 1853, the California Academy of Sciences is a leading scientific and cultural institution with a mission to explore, explain, and sustain life. It is home to an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, and research and education programs, all under one roof. In its new building, the choices behind various elements of construction and operation reflect a commitment to energy and water efficiency, recycled materials, and sustainable practices. The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the Academy with a LEED Platinum certification for New Construction in 2008, and a LEED Platinum certification for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance in 2011. The Academy is the world´s first Double Platinum museum and the world´s largest Double Platinum building.
